Shared hosting accounts have a limit on the number of outbound emails that can be sent per day. If you have reached this limit, outgoing emails will be held in the mail queue and delivered once the limit resets, or may be rejected if the queue becomes full.
What are the sending limits?
The outbound email limit on shared hosting accounts is 200 emails per mailbox per hour. This limit applies to email sent through webmail, email clients (Outlook, Apple Mail etc.), and emails sent by scripts or applications using the local mail server.
Why does this limit exist?
The sending limit protects the reputation of our mail servers. When a shared server’s IP address is used to send a large volume of email in a short period, it can trigger automatic blocklisting by major email providers, affecting deliverability for all customers on that server. The limit helps prevent this while still being sufficient for normal business email use.
What happens when the limit is reached?
Emails sent after the limit has been reached will either be held in the mail queue until the following day, or returned to the sender with a rejection notice depending on the mail client or application being used. The limit resets every 24 hours.
What should I do if I need to send more emails?
Use a dedicated email delivery service
Services such as Mailchimp, SendGrid, Brevo (formerly Sendinblue) or Amazon SES are designed for high-volume sending and are not subject to shared hosting limits. These are the recommended option for bulk sending, newsletters, and transactional email at scale. Your website or application can be configured to send through these services via SMTP or their API.
Upgrade your hosting plan
Higher-tier hosting plans may offer increased sending limits. Contact us to discuss your requirements and we can advise on the most suitable option.
How can I check how many emails I have sent today?
On cPanel hosting, email statistics including sending volumes can be viewed under Email > Track Delivery. On DirectAdmin hosting, email logs can be accessed via the User Level control panel under Email Manager. If you are unsure whether you have hit the limit, raise a ticket and we can check the mail logs for you.
